Improve Your Homeschooling with Khan Academy

Computer with the blog title

The benefits of homeschooling have been recognized by more and more families, especially after what we all experienced in 2020 and continue to face in some areas. One of the main things that discourage new homeschoolers though is the cost of most homeschool curricula, and the seemingly small amount of free homeschooling resources.

There are no-cost or low-cost learning opportunities all around us, especially online if you know where to look. One of the things I don’t see enough families leveraging is the fact that you can provide quality homeschooling with Khan Academy, and the purpose of this post is to help parent-teachers accomplish more and spend less by applying this amazing educational platform to their daily life as home educators.

You will learn as much as your children do, and probably have a little fun at the same time!

Hey there, my name is Jerromy and I am all about that homeschooling life!

I was homeschooled on a farm and I do my best to apply the same values I was brought up with as I teach my own children at home to this very day.

My main goal is to help other homeschooling parents make educated decisions about their kids’ schooling by providing resources and information to help them avoid the mistakes I have made on my journey homeschooling my kids.

What is Khan Academy?

Khan Academy is a sort of Tutoring on-demand system that allows students to study a wide berth of topics at their own pace.

There is no cost and there are no requirements as far as a curriculum goes; you simply learn what you want to learn and only when you want to learn it.

There are videos, interactive examples, and exercises, as well as a tracking dashboard so you can keep up with what your learners are actually learning. Their goal is to help students master the fundamentals

What can Khan Academy help homeschoolers learn?

I could easily say there is something of benefit for everyone no matter what you are trying to accomplish at any educational level. The content covers a wide array of instructionals and exercises in areas related to test prep, high school help, college prep, and anything you could need to build foundational skills in other technical areas like:

  • Computer Programming
  • Engineering
  • Chemistry
  • Math
  • Algebra
  • Calculus
  • Electrical
  • Animation
  • Statistics
  • Macroeconomics
  • And SO MUCH MORE!

Their goal is to help learners build critical skills in their areas of interest so they can expand on that knowledge later in life, and I can attest to the fact they meet their goal by far. All of my kids spend time each week on the platform, and I find myself getting sucked in at times searching for things that interest me personally while on the pursuit of educational materials for my students.

Who can benefit from homeschooling with Khan Academy?

Students and parents alike can learn SO MUCH from a single visit to Khan Academy, and adding this amazing resource to your students’ homeschooling lesson plan may be just the direction your students need to pick up a new skill entirely or expand existing knowledge at an accelerated pace.

If unschooling is more aligned with how your family educates at home, using these amazing resources is a no-brainer. There are no payments, no requirements, and no pressure to learn things outside the scope of your homeschooling lesson plans. Simply log in and learn when and where you want to from nearly any device that can access a web browser!

If a more traditional style of homeschooling is what you and your family prefer, try Khan Academy out as a supplemental resource for your students and see if they don’t improve in their studies, and have a little fun in the process!

Will Khan Academy work as a full homeschooling curriculum though?

In my honest opinion, there is absolutely no reason you couldn’t establish a free homeschool curriculum through Khan Academy to help your kids learn the skills to help them succeed in the areas they are interested in or even just general knowledge they will need in life.

Khan Academy has a personalized program where a child’s progress can be monitored for a better understanding of what the child needs to work on. Whatever advantages of homeschooling you are most fond of, Khan Academy can help you make things even better by giving you an entire platform to learn and a way to monitor your students closely in order to craft a better education plan, tailored to them specifically.

This would allow you to create a potential schedule and find lessons to meet the educational standards you have set for your children, and make sure they are understanding everything in close detail. You could also start to see where your children’s proficiencies and interests lie to further expand your educational efforts into areas they want to succeed in.

How my family uses Khan Academy in our daily homeschooling routine.

My oldest learned the basics of JavaScript in a few short lessons and now he is coding his own video games and learning the economics of running a business and budgeting so he can start his own game design company in the very near future. While he may not learn everything he will need, he won’t have to waste time in the future learning basics and can jump straight into the more high-demand stuff that will take his career further.

Generally any time one of my students has an issue with a subject or topic, we turn to Khan Academy to see if there is something breaking the process down further that I am able to in order to give a different perspective, generally in math or science, but there are many different reasons we use the resources available on Khan Academy.

My younger kids are still learning the basics of reading and math, but we reinforce that knowledge through videos over the fundamentals of each subject and give different examples of how to use their new skills for different situations they may encounter through the Khan Academy Kids App.

Try it out today if your students are under 2nd grade! 100% Free and Zero Ads!

No matter the situation or subject, you will most likely be able to find something that answers the question or helps prepare you and your students for what future lessons may hold, even outside of Khan Academy!

Final thoughts on homeschooling for free with Khan Academy

This is a great free resource that can make sinching up the loose areas in your homeschooling life a breeze. Maybe you just need something educational for your kids to do during off time, whatever the case may be, there is something for you on Khan Academy and I encourage you to take full advantage of the knowledge that can be gained from implementing exposure to the website, either as a supplemental resource or as a full-on homeschool curriculum.

There is virtually no risk to you, but the benefits could be astounding if you make your move and boost your homeschooling with Khan Academy today!

  1. I’ve been hearing about Khan Academy for a while now, and your review is the best I’ve heard. So, thank you very much. After reading our review, I determined that it is not appropriate for my child. She must attend school, and I must attend school. However, it is a fantastic idea for someone who may need to be at home, so thank you for a fantastic review.

    1. It really is a great resource, and I agree that kids need more than Khan Academy to learn everything they need to learn.

However, there are so many resources out there that you can use to educate yourself and your children, that anything else seems like a waste of resources; time, money, and sanity.

Homeschooling is about learning MORE than your peers in public school, though it isn’t a competition at all, my kids are well past other kids their age in terms of knowledge, emotions, and responsibility. Khan Academy has definitely helped my kids as a supplemental resource, but we actually have four different homeschooling curriculum that we rely on for teaching our kids.

If you really want to teach your kid at home, there are SO MANY resources available that make the process not only easier than public school but way more effective and efficient.

Either way, I wish you all the best on your education journey with your child, and if you need help finding the best homeschooling resources out there, dont hesitate to reach out again!

  2. Being able to study at home and our own pace has many advantages. I checked into Khan Academy and was pleasantly surprised by all the options we had to learn. I plan to continue using their platform in the future. All I will lack is more time to learn as much as I want.

    1. It truly is an amazing thing to be able to learn ANYTHING from home; I learned how to code on my own using free resources like Khan Academy, and now my kids are following suit.

I feel your pain though, and it seems like there is barely enough time to do the things we NEED to do, let alone learn a new skill. A practice we apply in my family is MAKING time; wake up 30 minutes earlier or go to bed 30 minutes later.

Spending just 30 minutes a day learning a new skill can truly change your life forever, so it is an easy price to pay in my opinion. I wish you all the best, and I hope you can manage to find some time to learn something new!

  3. I work with someone who is thinking of home schooling their kids. In fact, we had a conversation about it earlier today so I will be sure to share this article with her. I am sure she has never heard of this institution before and will find it very interesting

    1. Awesome to hear Aubin!

Khan Academy is a great resource for homeschoolers and public schoolers alike and can be implemented very easily into any child’s routine.

What I suggest for people just starting with homeschooling, is to turn to Khan Academy when they have a hard time explaining something to their children. Sometimes just seeing a math problem worked out a different way can be all a kid needs to grasp the idea and run with it!
